Golden butterflies spread their Wings: Collaboration is the key

Golden butterflies in Chennai demonstrate how 1+1 can be 3. They work with institutions and other non-government organizations (NGOs) to infuse heart into medicine.

Pallium India had the privilege to be part of an event in Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, Nungambakkam, Chennai where Golden Butterflies brought together doctors of eminence as well as trainees and other staff for a discussion on palliative care. The discussions included pain management, social support and end of life care. In addition to the presentation by Pallium India, Dr. Revathi Raj of Apollo Cancer, Dr. Julius Scott of Paediatric Oncology Department, of SRMC, Dr. Rejiv Rajendranath of Intergrated Cancer Care and Dr. Arathi Srinivasan spoke.

When remembering the resistance that palliative care met with in the 1990s, this acceptance of palliative care by the larger medical community was indeed heart-warming.

Later, we also visited RMD palliative care centre run by Dr Republica Sreedhar and team, with whom Golden Butterflies is collaborating to set up a cheerful room for children needing inpatient palliative care.

Report:

Expert talk on Paediatric Palliative care - Present Status and Future Directions

Golden Butterflies Children’s Palliative Care Foundation, in association with Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, Nungambakkam, organized a talk for pediatricians and post-graduate medical students on Paediatric Palliative Care by Dr. M. R. Rajagopal, Founder of Pallium India, a leading palliative care service provider, headquartered in Trivandrum, Kerala. Dr. Rajagopal was conferred the Padma Shri in 2018 for his efforts to make palliative care available at the homes of patients.

A video about Golden Butterflies was played.

Dr. M. Balasubramanian, Medical Director of Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, Nungambakkam welcomed the gathering and requested that all pediatricians listen to the parents and children before starting treatment./

Dr. Rajagopal thanked Golden Butterflies for the invitation and Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital for hosting the talk.

Using stories, Dr. Rajagopal illustrated that:

1. Treating a patient should include, physical, emotional and social well-being of the child as well as the family.

2. "Nothing further can be done" is a statement that cannot be used by any doctor in palliative care field.

3. Doctors need the services of society through trained volunteers, nurses, counselors, and therapists in order to treat a family holistically.

4. Poor prognosis causes immense emotional stress for the parents, and affects other siblings too.

Dr. Revathi Raj of Apollo Cancer Institute gave her expert comments. She mentioned the immense need for providing counselling services to the patients and their parents.

Dr. Julius Scott of the Paediatric Oncology Department, SRMC said that having Dr. Rajagopal among the fraternity was a dream come true, and that his practice has been positively influenced by the work of Pallium India.

Dr. Rejiv Rajendranath of Intergrated Cancer Care spoke about the work of Golden Butterflies and rededicated his time to overall care of his patients.

Dr. Julius Scott and Dr. Arathi Srinivasan were honoured by Dr Rajagopal.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Trustee, Golden Butterflies.

The talk was held in the auditorium of Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, Nungambakkam on 28th January 2020, from 2-3 pm. More than 180 people participated. They were undergraduate and post-graduate students of MBBS, Nursing, and Social Work, staff of NGOs, and hospital physicians were in attendance.
